APPLICATIONS UNDER REVIEW
Architectural Assistant - Part 1 - Degree Apprenticeship - BA (Hons)
SALARY: Competitive
HOURS: Monday to Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm 1 day will be allocated to day release at the University (day dictated by the University timetable)
DURATION: 4 years
LOCATION: Solent
Due to the large volume of applications received, it make take several weeks to receive a response as we begin the next stages of the process. A2 are looking for another apprentice in 2026! A2 are proud to be an architecture firm who have seen great success in bringing on younger team members through the government’s apprenticeship schemes. We believe learning on the job can create some of the most formidable architectural designers in the industry. There is mixed data on architecture post graduate employment rates, however from anecdotal evidence from the team we have built A2 and their first-hand knowledge with their previous classmates, we can safely say that most graduates do not end up working in architecture which we see as a real shame and waste of potential talent. By the time our apprentices have completed their bachelor’s degree they will also have 4 years of experience within one of the youngest, fastest growing, fast paced, forever changing architecture firms on the south coast. Our business is designed from the ground up as a platform to upskill, progress and create top level talent. We are looking for a minimum of 1 college leaving apprentice for this role however exceptions can be made if multiple candidates shine through. Important Points To Know: We believe in honesty and transparency as a business so below we have outlined some points to know and think about ahead of applying. Proximity & Location Our Solent Office is based near Whitley, Fareham. You will be working in office for 80% of your apprenticeship time so you must make sure that you are either located nearby or you are happy with the commute. We are located within walking distance of a train station, bus service and have parking nearby. Remote work is not available for apprentices for two reasons. You will need and be given support from your colleagues in office to fulfil your day-to-day roles and to be pushed to the next level. You also gain invaluable indirect knowledge from being in person (How to hold yourself and speak professionally, how to write emails internally and externally, how to communicate with clarity confidence and efficiency). For transparency - there is scope that during your apprenticeship, we may move office due to continued growth. Degree Apprenticeships Are Not Easy Something that is rarely raised/communicated is that a degree apprenticeship is not the easy route. Whilst you will be given all the support you, we can give, you will be expected to fulfil 80% of a full-time job role, whilst also balancing a university degree. You will of course be given study leave to fulfil these obligations however, if you don’t fully want and commit to it, it easy to fall behind. It seems most students now work during university to support their studies. 4 Year Commitment As you have less time in university than a full-time student, a degree does take slightly longer. You will be committed to this route for 4 years of your employment contract and studies. Understanding The Architecture Industry The Architecture industry is a vast, wide and sometimes misunderstood industry. There are many jobs in Architecture which are not ARB registered Architects as per the Architects Act 1997. This degree apprenticeship is the first step to becoming an ARB registered architect however there has been very recent and ongoing changes to the routes into architecture, the education system around it and there may even be reform during the time of your apprenticeship. Alternatively, there are many other jobs/careers in architecture from CAD/Architectural Technicians, Architectural Technologists (With their own governing body CIAT), BIM Co-ordinators, Architectural Graphics Assistants, Architectural Visualisers. It is even becoming commonplace for professionals to use the term Architectural Designers if they don’t fit the mould of the other titles or if they don’t want to be part of the ARB or RIBA. Whilst this confusing and seemingly untransparent industry can seem overwhelming, be safe assured that doing an undergraduate degree in architecture does not limit you to going to any of these routes/job titles and you will be able to figure out where you want to be in the industry during your time working in the job. Understand A2 & University of Portsmouth Degree To understand A2 as a company, please look through this website and check out our LinkedIn. To understand more about the degree course visit: https://www.port.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-architectural-assistant-degree-apprenticeship Timeframes The apprenticeship course officially starts in September 2026. We can and have in the past provided a part time job placements ahead of this for potential candidates to get a taste of the job, responsibilities and the office environment ahead of committing to a 4-year apprenticeship. This is also an opportunity to get work through some of the biggest learning curves of coming into industry ahead of also having to start a new university course. What To Do Next If you have read the points and you are still interested in applying to this opportunity. We have outlined the next steps. Not for you? Alternatively, if this 4-year apprenticeship doesn’t sound exactly right for you (you may not like the course contents, may already have a degree, may be better suited for another role in architecture). Please look at our other job postings or get in touch with an honest email. We are always happy to help and accommodate if we can. We can even give you advice or point you in the right direction of an alternative opportunity. Submit any/all of the below to careers@a2ad.co.uk CV Create a CV Outlining any relevant qualifications/ future qualification with predicted grades. Any previous work experience (relevant or irrelevant) Portfolio Some applicants may have relevant materials of projects they have created in school or college, it doesn’t not have to be exactly relevant to architecture but showcasing making something and your creativity goes a long way. At your stage of education presentation of a project is judged stronger then contents. Cover Letter We have attempted to be as open and transparent about this role as possible. We request the same for any covering letter received. We have already received large amounts of interest in this role, if you are the best person for it, help us filter find you. When writing you covering letter be as honest as possible, who are you, who do you want to be? why do you want to do this route?, why do you want to choose A2, what can you bring to the table over everyone else that makes you stand out.
